MOO GOURMET BURGERS

When you've got a new addition to the family, the idea of heading out for date night is a little anxiety inducing. You see, Elsa's got a tendency to whine and bark when we aren't close by - sometimes it seems she yelps simply because she likes the sound of it. I don't know how much noise she makes when we leave the house but the thought of her whining for hours on end and our neighbours being upset means I won't be booking a table for a degustation dinner in any hurry. That's where the speedy date night comes in - and what speedier dining choice than gourmet burgers, eh?

We ventured to Bondi and snapped up a table at Moo Gourmet Burgers. Time Out rates them among the best burger joints in town and I'm inclined to agree. This place is really special - unpretentious and casual but totally hip all at once. In addition to it's supreme burger menu, the cocktails and shakes are out of this world. This little diner is the perfect place for a casual date or catch up with your favourite people.

I started with a light and fluffy strawberry daiquiri, which I mopped up in seconds flat. Another one? Don't mind if I do...

The better half ordered the Mooteaser - a malteaser themed shake that I'd rate as the best chocolate milkshake I've ever tasted. I loved it so much I'm going to try and recreate it in a recipe post one of these days.

The menu offers a $30.00 behemoth called the Deluxe Moo. It's a double decker wagyu wonder with just about every filling imaginable. If you're game enough to order it, you get to join the Moo hall of fame: you and your burger captured indelibly in polaroid for all the world to gasp and marvel at. Here lies photographic evidence of all who have tried to conquer this crazy creation:

Our menu choices were a tad more tame.

We both ordered the Black & White Burger - 100% Australian Angus Pure Natural Beef, thick cut mozzarella, free range egg, tomato, mixed leaf lettuce & home made mayonnaise. I had mine on a gluten free bun with caramelised onion and bacon extras.

When I said they were a tame menu option, I was speaking relatively. I won't lie though - we would totally have finished them if we hadn't have scoffed these babies: beer battered onion rings that are as addictive as nicotine. (Side note: people always say "addictive as crack" but it's actually the second most addictive substance in the world after nicotine. I feel that bit more proud for being a quitter!)

With a food baby taking up space in my belly, we headed for home to make sure our real baby hadn't missed us too much. She was fine though - we were home within an hour and a half.

Burger dates: that's what I'm talking about!

  2. I love Moo - I love how all of their meat is pasture-raised & ethically sourced. Makes it all the more tasty IMO.
